\How Successful is your Marriage

There are people who marry because they have fallen in love with each other. There are those who married after a long thinking process of "Is he or she the right one for me?" Others marry because their parents considered a particular person suitable. There are those whose marriages were arranged by their fathers or by both parents. There are people who were married because they were pushed into doing so, yet others marry out of fear of being left alone and never being able to marry at all. There are those who marry because they are unable to say no, and others who marry because they know each other from early childhood. There were those who married because they were attracted to one another.
I have seen so many marriages succeed, no matter the reason for the marriage, and have come across so many unsuccessful marriages and divorces while the reasons for marriage have been the same as those successful ones.
So when one marries, what is the chance for marital happiness?
Take that couple that everyone knows were meant for each other. Their marriage will certainly succeed. Yet throughout my life, I have seen couples who seemingly have every chance in the world and whose relationships fail.
But aren’t marriages made in heaven?
There is only one answer. Those who have succeeded have worked on themselves and on their marriages.
Many marriages begin well, but soon afterwards small problems arise; discussions fights, arguments and frustrations present themselves. We are only human and this is part of our lives and what we do to each other. Yet from the beginning we start to grow away from one another just because of the events and traumas of married life. We build walls between our spouses and ourselves, we are separated, and after ten years of married life our marriage is not the same any more.
From my own experience, after forty years of married life, there is one tool that brought us, my wife and myself, to a stage where we can say now feels like being our honeymoon period, what I wanted to have felt at the start of our marriage.
And we came to this result through TAT while working together and talking things over with each other.
Let me tell you my story:
We married forty years ago in 1971. We were still very young when we married; I was twenty-two years old and Chava was only twenty. I had doubts as whether to marry her even up to the day of our wedding, and later I heard that Chava had the same thoughts.
In The Netherlands where we lived, one could not find at that time anyone to help prepare one for marriage -- a madrich or the suchlike. There was nothing of preparation for our marriage by an experienced counselor. We had to figure out everything together. If we wanted to ask our parents, that was fine, but there was nothing more than that.
Our first-born son came into the world some time after we married and Chava fell into a kind of depression. It is possible I was one of the reasons. Why? Chava was sad and felt that I was not a good husband. I was too selfish. She was totally frustrated with me and wanted to divorce me.
That was in 1975. We went to file for divorce, but I felt terrible and worked hard to get her back and to convince her that it was possible for me to change (we had long conversations together). Ultimately, we stayed together. I changed my job and became a social worker at the Dutch Welfare Services.
Then our second child was born - a girl. Chava was very weak yet life continued until we had four children. From the birth of our third child Chava was extremely depressed. We went through gehinnom in those days; we went through the motions of life, but barely. Sometimes I felt drawn from two sides since I had to go to work, but the situation at home was too demanding. In the morning, I took care of the children and took them to school. I tried to be back home when the children came home from school but sometimes, if that did not work out, Chava had to do it.
I never told anyone that Chava was clinically depressed – neither to members of our family, nor to anyone outside the family. I came up with all kind of stories in order not to have to say that she was feeling  depressed and could not see people.
This went on for years. At one point Chava went to a kind of counseling retreat for three months to get help. That helped to get back on the road a little bit, but our lives were terrible. All this made me search for better techniques to help her heal.
I discovered NLP and started to work with Chava regularly to get her out of her depression. It helped a little bit, but it was not enough. Looking for a solution, I went through all kind of thinking processes about my life. People have asked me why I did not divorce her, but that was something that I never wanted to do. I loved her and wanted her to heal.
We made Aliyah and lived in a kibbutz for two years. There, the depression deteriorated and Chava received medication. Yet she felt stifled, lonely, and depressed; she needed to get out, not be isolated in on a mountaintop with nowhere to go. We kept on talking together, trying to find solutions for everything in our lives. We have done this throughout our marriage and this communication kept the channels open.
Then we went to live in Shiloh where all the changes started. We encountered TAT in the year 2000 “by accident", as some would say, but Chava and I both believe that Hashem dropped TAT into our laps; that this was divine providence – hashgacha elyona. We starting using it ourselves and on each other. There was a point in time when she suffered from a slipped disc and had to stay in bed, which, obviously, was not that good for her mentally. At that time, I studied in a yeshiva and we had no money – we were as poor as church mice.
We were on welfare. In order to earn money, I gradually began to work with TAT. These times became the best of our marriage. Slowly, Chava came out of her depression and after approximately thirty four-years healed totally. We kept our marriage going through our conversations and discussions on how to work things out and, what is more, by trying new things to change our lives to find new, good opportunities.
Another factor that caused tension and strife in our marriages was Chava’s illnesses. Over the years in addition to the slipped disc, she underwent seven operations and contracted Mononucleosis and CMV (Cytomegalovirus) which later became Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Within eight months, Chava was able to heal herself from the CFS.
Most important of all, Chava achieved total healing from all the traumas experienced during her youth and which came up during her depression. This was done through our working on them with TAT. We also used TAT to work on our relationship; when I did something bothered her, she did TAT on it, and when something bothered me in her, I did TAT on that. We did TAT on almost every aspect of our married life.
So now we can say that what we feel for each other is, more than ever, a honeymoon feeling.
We are the best for each other. We thank Hashem for keeping us together, for helping us find TAT and reaching the point in our lives that we can relate our own experiences to others.
From our experience, I cannot emphasize too strongly the importance of the following three things: communication – to never stop communicating and talking things over; to jointly find solutions to all kind of problems; and, most of all, TAT that changed our lives totally.
Try TAT for your marriage. You can all succeed in achieving a long life together!!!

TAT and Preparation for Pregnancy and Birth

TAT has proven itself the best preparation for birth and pregnancy. Why? Because women have all kind of beliefs, opinions, fantasies and thoughts on how the pregnancy and birth are going to be. And how we believe, think or fantasize is exactly how the pregnancy and the childbirth are going to be.
The same goes for those women who have suffered from trauma during childbirth and those who have a lot of anxieties and fears about the pregnancy and birth.
Sometimes, this is also connected with your own birth and your mother’s birthing experience.
I have heard from many women that childbirth and TAT go together; that they are inseparable; that it is necessary to prepare oneself with the help of TAT.
Below are two stories from women who underwent TAT as preparation for childbirth.

In the advanced stage of pregnancy

I was in the advanced stage of pregnancy when he asked if their was anything on which I wanted to work in connection with childbirth. Since I had suffered through unpleasant nursing sessions the first days after birth with my previous children, I didn’t have to think much: I was afraid of the after-birth contractions awaiting me. As every mother of children knows, and has possibly experienced, the contractions after birth, which shrink the womb back into its original size, are far from pleasant. It is common to see the nursing mothers grimacing from the pain they feel in the lower abdomen while they nurse their babies. Some mothers regularly take pain medication before nursing as they find those contractions so difficult to bear.
As I was telling the therapist all the above he exclaimed: “That’s an erroneous belief!” “Nevertheless, it is true,” I countered, “ask any mother, especially one who has gone through several births, and she will tell you that it is a fact. Any doctor will explain it to you.” My therapist, however, kept insisting that this is an erroneous belief. It is not an absolute truth. Only HaShem is an Absolute Truth! All truth or statistics have exceptions. It is because we have heard about things we, so to speak, invite them to happen to us. This idea is similar to the self-fulfilling prophecies that parents are cautioned about with the upbringing of their children.
Since “mind over matter” is not just a saying but a very true reality of the human psyche, the thoughts and beliefs we have of ourselves and our lives make a tremendous impact on us.
In any case, as we kept arguing back and forth, he suggested, let’s just work on it. So we did.
Well, seeing is believing as they say. I can truly say that after this birth I didn’t suffer from the post-natal contractions.
Did I have them? Yes, I did, but I didn’t suffer from them! Let me explain what I mean. This time, thanks to the TAT I had done, I had a totally different experience. Whenever I sat down to nurse, and the nursing hormone that contracts the milk ducts and gets the milk flowing also contracted the uterus, I felt like shouting, “Hurray, the hormones work, I will have milk and my womb is shrinking nicely back into shape”.
So I did feel the sensation but it was entirely positive and not negative. Not only did I not fight the sensation but I almost welcomed it. In addition, since I saw it positively I didn’t pile all previous associations of pain and fear etcetera on top of any pain that I may have had, since that would have made me feel even more pain than the actual sensation of the contracting muscle.

This is really very much the idea of the Swiss method of birthing where they teach the mothers-to-be to interpret the sensation of the stomach contractions not as pain from which we try to flee, but rather a sensation that which we welcome and with which we can work.

This real-life example showed me very clearly that it is all in the mind. We make life so hard for ourselves because of all these erroneous beliefs. This concept is recognized nowadays in conventional medicine as well: they call it psychosomatic illnesses -- illnesses that seem imagined but where the patient has an actual physical pain even though everything is physically alright. Psychosomatic pain is triggered by the patient’s mind. Additionally, conventional medicine admits that certain diseases are caused partly or mainly from stresses or fears etc. That is, imbalances of the emotions and thoughts of man can have a direct influence on his physical well-being, causing high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer.

TAT and the Birth of my Fifth child

Happily, we had a baby boy on Tuesday 9 Tevet, at 7:03 a.m. The contractions began in the night, at approximately 11:00 p.m. They were light contractions, every 15-20 minutes. I thought that this would stop at some point, and I prepared for sleep, knowing that I needed to pay attention to the clock. I awoke intermittently, and noted when I was wakening, breathing, and returning to sleep.

I watched the clock and saw that the contractions were arriving every few minutes (four, five or seven minutes apart). At around 5:00 a.m. we left for Yerushalayim, and arrived before six o’clock. The birth progressed rapidly. I breathed deep breaths. I didn’t suffer during the contractions.
Only with the last contractions, which were at the point of eight centimeters dilation, when I had no chance to rest, did I feel pain, but this lasted for only several minutes. I arrived at the hospital, and after two pushes, the baby was out.

Meanwhile, the midwives had discovered that I was in active labor after two cesarean births, and became anxious. I, however, remained totally calm, and didn’t understand what all the full was all about. Since I was bleeding heavily, I was taken to the operating room for revision (cleaning of uterus in order to check that there is no endometrial tearing). The hospital had me sign an agreement for surgery, emphasizing that if G-d forbid they found tearing, the uterus would need immediate removal. I remember telling them that all is well, and that the uterus was intact.

I was in a state of internal peace that didn’t let me be pressured from without. (Afterwards, I remembered that after my other births I had bled copiously, so it was normal for me and not a result of the surgeries. Another thing that calmed the doctors was my high hemoglobin level).

It was plain and clear to me that I would have a regular birth and not a C-section. The labor passed so quickly (there wasn’t even time for an epidural), and so easily, that I had a hard time believing that I had already given birth.
This was the first birth out of the five that I have undergone, where I was calm. Even the stress of those around me didn’t affect me - and they were very stressed! I had a normal birth after two cesarean births. I arrived physically and psychologically prepared for a regular birth.
I didn’t consider the possibility of another cesarean, even though it is usual after two operations to birth only through surgery. Regarding an epidural - there is nothing to say. Everything happened so swiftly that it was unnecessary, and I even forgot about that particular possibility.

I think that this birth was so quick and easy because of the work I did with TAT that gave me the feeling of preparedness, the knowledge of what I should do, and the calm that I felt. It all happened so quickly that I couldn’t believe that I was already “after”.

I thank G-d that He heard my prayers for a regular, easy and swift birth with the help of TAT, and that He sent me the right emissaries at the right time, to help me prepare for this birth.
